"The Pooh Books" finely bound by Bayntun-Riviere and with a Milne ALS
A.A. Milne. A complete set of the "Winnie-the-Pooh Books,"
comprising: When We Were Very Young; Winnie-the-Pooh;
Now We Are Six; The House at Pooh Corner. Decorations
by E.H. Shepard.FIRST TRADE EDITIONS, FINELY BOUND AND WITH AN ALS. The second state of When We Were Very Young with preliminary page ix numbered. Uniformly bound by Bayntun-Riviere in full crushed morocco, decorated, ruled, and lettered in gilt. Each with elaborately gilt turn-ins, each stamp-signed in gilt by the binder on the front turn-in, each with marbled endpapers, original cloth bound-in with each volume.
With an ALS bound into When We Were Very Young from Milne to the English theater and film actress Irene Rooke, dated December 23, 1923: "Dear Miss Rooke, How nice of you to remember us. We often talk of you, and hope to see you in a play of mine again. We are well - including Billy. You remember the pastoral scene you sent him? Yesterday I had a busy ten minutes blowing the sheep over for his amusement; we hadn't done it before, and it was very popular; one gets encores so easily with the young. A happy Christmas to you and the best of luck in the New Year. Yours sincerely, A.A. Milne."
Irene Rooke (1878-1958) was an English actress who performed on both the stage and the screen. She was a member of the original London cast of the three-act comedy The Truth About Blayds, written by A.A. Milne, which debuted at the Globe Theatre in 1921.
Condition: Minor sunning to spines. A few scattered spots to textblocks. ALS with light creases along old folds.
