Description
Lincoln & Hamlin: Matching Pair of Autographs and Salt Print Photographs. Both Lincoln and his running mate were deluged with autograph requests prior to and following the election of 1860. One gentleman, C. R. Hicks, wrote to both who graciously complied with his request. We offer both autographs. The first is written on a 5 ¼" x 2 ¾" slip of paper. Written from Springfield on November 1, 1860 (likely in the hand of Presidential Secretary John Nicolay), it reads: "Herewith I send you my autograph which you request. Yours truly [signed] A. Lincoln." Hicks has affixed an oval salt print photograph of Lincoln, after the Roderick Cole portrait of 1858. The second item is written on a 4 ¼" x 4 ¼" album page. Written from Washington, D.C. by the Vice President-elect on February 26, 1861, it reads: "Your note of the 19th is received. Yours truly [signed] H. Hamlin." It is entirely in the hand of Hamlin and has an oval salt print photo attached (with added ink highlights). The signatures are both clear and bold. These make an exceptional pair.Auction Info
