Abraham Lincoln: Samples of His Handwriting. Two examples of Lincoln's handwriting, excised from larger documents. Includes a 2 ½" x ¾" slip of paper inscribed "Geo. Sowers." and another 3 ¾" x ¾" slip inscribed "Jacob Schwartz - desertion." (mounted to card) Private Jacob Schwartz, Co. E, 13th Massachusetts Volunteers was sentenced to death on September 13, 1863, but his sentence was commuted by the President. George Sowers served in Company E, 4th Ohio Regiment and, like Schwartz, submitted a pardon application for an unknown offense.
