Description

Abraham Lincoln: 1843 Autograph Legal Document. 7 ½" x 6" document on lined paper, written by Abraham Lincoln (eleven lines), constituting an agreement or "satisfaction" by the plaintiff to discharge his complaint in light of the receipt of a "certain bay mare". Dated June 6, 1843, docketed on verso by the County Clerk. Lincoln represented Beekman and Spears in the case known as "Bale for the use of Hurd v. Beekman and Spears". Written during the time when Lincoln was in partnership with Stephen T. Logan. Minor horizontal toning at fold, two areas of discoloration at top and bottom resulting from long-term contact with another piece of paper. Sold together with a 1915 notarized letter from Ross A. Nance, Clerk of the Circuit Court of Menard County, verifying that the handwriting conforms to examples of Lincoln's handwriting on file in the official records and is authentic.
