Description
"...there is a large quantity of stock on the sea coast of your Colony, which are much exposed to the incursions of the enemy..."
John Hancock Manuscript Document Signed as President of the
Second Continental Congress, Transmitting a Congressional
Resolution. One sheet, 206 x 320 mm. Philadelphia, July 17 and
July 19, 1776. Dated less than two weeks after the signing of the
Declaration of Independence, John Hancock, President of the
Continental Congress, transmits a Congressional Resolution to the
New Jersey Convention to "earnestly recommend" stock on the
coast of the colony be moved further inland lest it fall into the
hands of the enemy - whether by accident or intent. Interestingly,
the official Journals of Congress record the resolution as ordering
the stock to be driven "to a place of security," whereas the
present document records the same phrase as "to a place of
safety."The document reads, in full:
In Congress July 17, 1776
Resolved that it be earnestly recommended to the convention of New Jersey to cause all the stock on the sea coast, which they shall apprehend to be in danger of falling into the hands of the enemy to be immediately removed and driven back into the country to a place of safety.
Extract from the minutes

I am ordered to forward to you the above resolution & earnestly recommend it to you to cause the stock to be removed back into the country to a place of safety.
I am
Gentlemen
Your obed. humble servt.
