C. McClurg & Co., 1914.8vo. Pictorial title-page. Publisher's dark red cloth, spine lettered in gilt, upper cover lettered in gilt and ruled in blind; original pictorial illustrated dust jacket by Fred J. Arting. Housed in a full morocco folding case.
FIRST EDITION, FIRST PRINTING, with "W. F. Hall Printing Co. / Chicago" in Old English type in two lines on the copyright page, in the first binding, with publisher's name in Old English script ("A. C. McClurg") in one line on spine, and no acorn device.
Burroughs' "greatest and most enduring literary creation" was so well received even before publication that the editor of The All-Story elected to publish the tale in its entirety (rather than serially) in the October 1912 issue. This edition marks the first in book form and the first of Burroughs' many novels to be published in hardcover, with Burroughs' extensive edits and corrections from the magazine edition. The first edition was comprised of approximately 10,000 copies, with 5,000 copies in the first printing.
Condition: Spine slightly sunned with modest dulling; binding slightly leaned. Dust jacket with $1.30 price listed on the spine; corners clipped as issued; some restoration to the spine panel, flap folds, and edges, with some color retouched (some flaking).
