1951].Ink and gouache on board. Measures approximately 14 x 16 1/2 inches (sight) (35 x 42 cm), framed to an overall size of approximately 20 1/2 x 22 3/4 inches (52 x 58 cm). Signed at lower right: Kyle.
This illustration was published as the wrap-around dust jacket for the first edition of Isaac Asimov's Foundation, published by the Gnome Press in 1951. Foundation is the first volume in Asimov's Foundation Trilogy, followed by Foundation and Empire (Gnome Press, 1952), and Second Foundation (Gnome Press, 1953). The trilogy won the Hugo Award for "Best All-Time Series" in 1966.
David Kyle (American, 1919-2016) was an author, illustrator, and publisher of science fiction. Kyle and Martin Greenberg co-founded the Gnome Press in 1948, the leading fan publisher of science fiction in the mid-20th century. The Gnome Press was responsible for publishing many of the defining titles of the genre during this period, and the firm's published authors include Arthur C. Clarke, L. Sprague de Camp, Robert A. Heinlein, Fritz Leiber, C.L. Moore, Frederik Pohl, and E.E. Smith, among others.
Condition: Fine. Not examined out of frame.
