Description
Wernher von Braun Marshall Space Flight Center Archive from the Personal Collection of Ernst Stuhlinger. Approximately thirty-five dated typed/copied weekly documents (approximately fifty-five pages total) titled "NOTES [date] Stuhlinger," 1962-1966, 8" x 10.5" or larger, most with penciled initials and notations from von Braun himself. A fascinating and historical look at the inner workings of the MSFC under the direction of Dr. Wernher von Braun (1912-1977). Dr. Ernst Stuhlinger (1913-208) was director of the space science lab during this period. In a Certificate of Authenticity included with this lot, he explains how von Braun managed the center: "...He used a surprisingly simple, but extremely effective tool, the weekly notes. Each of about 35 of the top engineers, managers, and scientists in the center wrote a one page summary during the week. Those 35 pages were submitted to von Braun each Friday. By Tuesday morning von Braun had read all of them, and had written his comments, suggestions, and directives on the margins. Then, each note was copied 35 times, and each of the writers received not only his own annotated page back, but also the pages of all his colleagues..." Typically von Braun would check off each paragraph and then initial the document with the date of his reading. He would often write notes regarding follow-up needed, ask for clarification, or make suggestions. Generally fine condition.To quote further from the Certificate of Authenticity: "This will certify that these are the original 1960 era reports and have remained in my possession until 2006. These working papers were an integral part of the work flow necessary to develop the rockets that flew man into outer space and ultimately the moon. They are authentic in every respect and I am proud to have preserved them for future generations."
