Wernher von Braun Mercury-Atlas 1 (MA-1) Launch Cover Signed. A 6.5" x 3.625" postal cover cancelled at Patrick Air Force Base, Florida on July 29, 1960. Typed at the upper left is: "Atlas Unmanned Mercury Capsule. MA-1. Exploded after Take Off and was Destroyed." Von Braun has boldly signed beneath. This mission was to accomplish a suborbital test flight and reentry. The Atlas rocket, carrying an unmanned Mercury spacecraft, suffered a structural failure fifty-eight seconds into the flight and sank into the Atlantic Ocean. Very light toning, a penciled address, else very fine.
