Description
Used while on the moon by America's first astronaut, Alan Shepard.
Apollo 14 Lunar Module Flown Portable Utility Light as Presented by Mission Commander Alan Shepard to Support Crew Member William Pogue. This portable light of approximately 2.25" x 2.25" x 1.5" plus mounting bracket and attached coiled electrical cord has a Part Number of "LDW 340-53053-3-2/7" and a Serial Number of "0007". The electrical connectors are wrapped in Beta cloth covers and the light has strips of Velcro attached for easy mounting. The entire piece has been attractively mounted to a 13" x 10" x 0.75" wooden plaque with an engraved plate, "APOLLO 14/ Jan. 31 - Feb. 9, 1971/ To: BILL/ From: AL, STU, & ED". This light was flown to the surface of the moon as part of the Apollo 14 Lunar Module Antares that spent more than thirty-three hours in the lunar highlands of Fra Mauro, on February 5-6, 1971.The Portable Utility Light was used to provide extra lighting for Apollo 14 Commander Alan Shepard. The light connected to the overhead utility light panel and switches provided Shepard with one-step dimming for light-intensity control. Edgar Mitchell's light from Antares resides in the U.S. Astronaut Hall of Fame in Florida. Before jettisoning the LM, Shepard dismantled the light's cable assembly and brought the utility light back with him as a souvenir of his lunar voyage. It was presented to astronaut support crewmember William R. Pogue at the Apollo 14 pin party in Houston, Texas, in March 1971. Apollo 14 was the third lunar landing mission commanded by America's first astronaut in space, Shepard, with Lunar Module Pilot Mitchell, and Command Module Pilot Stuart Roosa.
The light is accompanied by a signed ASF Certificate of Authenticity from Edgar Mitchell.
This lot has been consigned by the Astronaut Scholarship Foundation. The proceeds will benefit this non-profit organization.
