Description
Apollo 13 Flown Spacesuit Repair Kit Signed by and from the Personal Collection of Mission Commander James Lovell. This Beta cloth kit with Velcro closures is 6" x 4.75" x 1" when folded and 13" x 14" overall when opened out. Lovell has certified and signed the outside front: "Space Suit repair kit on board Apollo 13 Lunar Module James Lovell". There is a NASA/ International Latex Corporation tag sewn inside underneath the repair patches with the following information: "SPEC. CP 1003/ ITEM EMU MAINTENANCE KIT/ A6L-504000-09/ MODEL NO. 1003 A/ SERIAL 037/ DATE 8/68/ CONTRACT NO. NAS 9-6100/ 74897". A paper label on the top of the repair patches has the following data: "POUCH ASSEMBLY, EMU MAINTENANCE KIT/ PART NO. A6L- 503058-08 SERIAL NO. 037 SPEC. NO. CE1012/ MODEL NO. A-6L CONTRACT NO. NAS 9-6100 DATE 3/70". The EMU mentioned stands for "Extravehicular Mobility Unit" which is what the Apollo astronauts wore on space EVAs and moonwalks.Inside, the kit contains everything necessary for astronauts to make important repairs and perform maintenance on their suits: fabric repair patches, fabric repair tape, pad lubricant, repair patches, a tool, seal replacements, cleaning/ anti-fog pads, drying/ polishing towels, and usage instructions. We cannot find record where one of these kits has been sold previously at auction. Certainly, this was an important part of the LM gear and would make an excellent addition to even the most sophisticated space collection. Extremely fine condition with just a bit of light soiling.
