Description

Confederate Cavalry Saber by Unknown Maker.
34.5" steel saber with scabbard, matching Figure 92 in the reference book "Confederate Edged Weapons". Quoting: "The blade is almost straight, 34 1/2 long, with a modified flat back and a single tapering fuller on either side. The grip is wrapped with oilcloth and wound with twisted brass wire. The pommel is heavy and 'knob-like' in appearance. Superficial examination would indicate that the guard has been stamped from a heavy sheet of brass... it has been cast and file marks are apparent on the square sides of the flat branches. There is no slot for sabre knot. The only marks on the sabre shown consist of three punched "dots" followed by the number '27'. This is found on the underside of the counterguard.... Scabbard is of metal with all brass mounts, including throat, drag and carrying rings." Blade has scattered nicks along the sharp edge. The scabbard has typical rust covering most of the surface. From the Don Limpert Collection.
