Description
John Barringer: 1st Regiment New York Dragoons Letter Archive.Group of eight [8] letters written to his wife in 1863 and 1864, together with transmittal envelopes and typed transcripts. Some excerpts: "...I am well and have hopes of living to return to my home and family but it is uncertain... [Manassas] It was a hard fight for a short time, they could have whipped us for there was twice our number, but we went into them so savage they left in a hurry... Richard Humphrey was killed in the army, shot through the head by a guerilla. Penn Fish was also killed the other day at Charleston by the bursting of our own guns... we are in danger all the time as the rebs are shooting at us constantly, they have rifle pits in sight of our camp and when they see one they shoot... the report is there is 90,000 of them and Stonewall Jackson is in command. If that is so, we shall have a hard time... Our regiment has been in the fort or rifle pits day and night for two weeks... The rebels is so near we can see them any time from our camp and they are firing at us constantly. There was a ball came very near me this morning.. Our regiment and two companies of the 99 went out and gave them battle the other day. We had one man killed and five wounded... The Rebels are trying to get between us and Norfolk and cut off our supplies, but I think we will keep them from it... The rebs are so bold and nearly starved out and this their last resort. I think if we whip them out here, it will use them up in this part of Rebeldom. Those prisoners are very hard, filthy looking objects." The letters are typical in discussing family matters, food rations and transmittal of pay. From the Don Limpert Collection.
