Description

Thirteen-Star Naval Ensign Dated May, 1915.

Machine-sewn wool construction with white muslin stars. The flag measures approximately 35 x 66-inches and has four brass grommets on the hoist bunting. The reverse side of the hoist end is stenciled in black letters: "U.S. BOAT FLAG No. 10 NAVY YARD NEW YORK MAY 1915." During the 19th century for small ensigns the Navy used a 13-star flag which became known as "boat flag" due to its predominant use on smaller boats such as launches, gigs and tenders. In 1912, President Taft formally recognized the Navy's longstanding use of the 13-star ensign in Executive Order 1637, which defined the flag's precise dimensions but the practice was discontinued a few years later in 1916.

Condition: Moderate to heavy scattered holes and short tears. Fair.
