Description

U.S. Cavalry Sword, Model 1860 Type.

An example of a U.S. Model 1860 Cavalry Saber, displayed in a decorative modern wooden and glass presentation case. The sword features a curved single-edged blade marked on the ricasso with "U.S." over "W.D.", likely denoting an inspector's initials or arsenal acceptance marking. The hilt retains its three-branch brass guard, leather-wrapped grip, and complete twisted brass wire binding, all consistent with regulation cavalry service swords of the Civil War and postwar era. The sword is mounted with its nickel-plated scabbard, fitted with two suspension rings and drag shoe, exhibiting a naturally aged patina. The weapon remains a classic representation of Union cavalry equipment, prized for its balance, reach, and reliability in mounted combat. Its form and markings reflect the enduring design used across U.S. cavalry regiments from the 1860s into later 19th-century service. Blade is 35 1/4-inches long.

Condition: Appears very good overall as displayed. The blade shows even toning with scattered spotting visible through the glass but no major edge damage. The leather grip wrap and wire binding are intact, showing only minor age wear. The brass guard retains a mellow golden tone with some pitting and surface oxidation, likely from long-term storage. The scabbard shows light tarnish and handling marks consistent with age. The sword has not been examined outside the display case, so hidden areas cannot be fully assessed.
