Description
Distinguished Confederate General William Ruffin Cox: Personally Owned Sword and Other Items Directly From the Cox Family. Comprising: 1.) A U.S. Model 1860 Staff & Field Officers' sword presumably acquired long after the war by General Cox. The double-edged blade measures 31-inches and has a Ridabock & Co., New York mark on the reverse ricasso. Both sides of the blade are etched with panoplies of arms and floral scroll. The obverse with an eagle; the reverse with a "U.S.". Gilded brass hilt with folding counterguard. Wire-wrapped black shark skin grips. Nickel-plated scabbard with brass mounts. 2.) Oil on board painting of Cox in his Confederate general's uniform. The unsigned work measures 16 x 24-inches; 22 ½ x 30 ½-inches overall in a contemporary frame. The work was likely done in the late 19th or early 20th century. 3.) Brady CDV of Cox posed seated in civilian clothing. Brady's National Photographic Portrait Galleries imprint on the verso. 4.) 6 ½ x 8 ½-inch photograph of Cox taken in his later days. Framed under glass in a contemporary frame to an overall size of 12 ½ x 15 ½-inches. 5.) Small book with printed wrappers titled The Greatest Confederate Commander, 36 pages, published circa 1907. Statesmen and former soldiers, including Cox, give their opinion on the greatest Confederate commanders of the war. 6.) William Ruffin Cox memorial book titled A Sketch of the Life and Service of General William Ruffin Cox, Richmond: Whittet & Shepperson, Printers, 1921. Octavo. 41 pages. Photograph of Cox used as frontispiece. Original maroon cloth with titles stamped in gilt on the front board. 7.) Fanny Lyman Cox (General Cox's wife) memorial volume titled In Fond and Loving Memory of Fanny Lyman Cox, privately printed, circa 1885, octavo, 77 pages, portrait of Mrs. Cox used as the frontispiece. Original blue cloth over beveled boards with titles stamped in gilt on the front board. 8.) Small broadside "North Carolina Personalities Distinguished Confederate General From North Carolina Wm. Ruffin Cox". 6 ½ x 10 ¾-inches. Inscribed by Henry Rood Jr.William Ruffin Cox (1832-1919) served in many of the fiercest engagements of the war, perhaps having the record for the number of wounds sustained. He was wounded three times at Chancellorsville, wounded in the face at the battle of Kelly's Ford, eventually sustaining 11 wounds during the course of the war. At his death in 1919 he was one of the last surviving Confederate generals. The items in this lot have been obtained directly from the Cox family.
Condition: 1.) Very good. The blade is bright with little discernable scabbard wear. Light scattered surface rust on the scabbard. 2.) Very good. Some minor crazing to paint surface.
