Amazing Condition Original Civil War Regulation Rubberized Poncho Identified to Private Robert L. Mckenzie, D Company, Maine 1st Battalion Infantry. In simply beautiful condition this original poncho measures approximately 70 x 43 ½-inches. The rubberized side is remarkable supple after over 150 years. The edge of the poncho has 16 evenly spaced brass grommets, all complete and in fine condition. 14" reinforced section in the center with slit for the head to pass through with tin button for closure to use the poncho for other purposes such as ground cover, etc. The canvas side is maker marked in two oval red inked stamps one above the other: "MANUFACTURED / THE PHOENIX RUBBER CO. / LICENSED BY / UNION INDIA RUBBER CO. / [Illegible] / NEW YORK". The back is also personalized by hand in large ink letters "R. McKenzie / B.1.". A fantastic article of field gear almost never encountered in this condition.

Robert L. McKenzie was a resident of Portland, Maine, enlisted at the age of 18 on April 5, 1865 as a private. The next day he mustered into D Company, Maine 1st Battalion Infantry. He mustered out a year later in Charleston, South Carolina. He late enlistment date may account for the superb condition of the poncho.
