Description
WWII Battle Flag of the American Submarine USS Dace (SS-247).Double-sided, 58 x 47-inches on gray waterproof textile (nylon perhaps), bordered with cotton bunting on three sides and with hand-painted designs.
An historic and rare flag from the American submarine campaign in the Pacific, this is the battle flag of the USS Dace, a submarine which saw much action and accounted for many tons of enemy shipping during the war. Her most notable action was in conjunction with her sister submarine the USS Darter where they made a daring attack against Japanese ships in the Palawan Passage, at the outset of the Battle of Leyte Gulf for which they received a Navy Unit Commendation.
The flag features the official insignia of the submarine - a fish riding a torpedo - in the upper corner. A black silhouette of a submarine, bearing the Dace's hull number "247" looms large in the center of the flag. Beneath the image of the submarine appear fourteen hand-painted Japanese flags, including two slightly larger Imperial Japanese Navy "rising sun" ensigns, signifying enemy warships. One of these may represent the sub's biggest victory, the Japanese cruiser Maya, sunk during the fight in the Palawan Passage. She was officially credited with six kills, and the excess flags represent attacks reported as kills by her crew which were not later confirmed by Japanese records. An image of an exploding depth charge with the number "276", represents the number of such attacks the Dace had survived by war's end. Above the image of the sub is a falling bomb with four red bars, indicating the number of enemy air attacks she survived. At top center appears a painted ribbon bar for the Navy Unit Commendation, awarded for her actions in the Palawan passage. The upper left corner bears the ribbon bars for the Navy Cross, the Silver Star, the Bronze Star, the Navy and Marine Corps Medal, and the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, all surrounded by gold stars some of which have been touched up. After the war she was placed in reserve and later modernized. She was loaned to Italy and ultimately sold for scrap in 1975.
Condition: Light to moderate soiling and wear overall, with a period patch repair to the upper right corner, and with several small splits caused by storage folds. Very good condition.
