Description

Rare Saxon Customs Officials' or Military Police Spiked Helmet. Measuring approximately 9 ½-inches tall with a polished leather skull and visors. The front visor is trimmed in gilded-brass; the rear visor is untrimmed. The distinct gilded-brass Saxon customs eagle front plate with "Providentiae Memor" motto is mounted to the helmet via two threaded posts and square nuts and washers. There are no additional holes in the front. A gilded-brass spine runs from the rear of the spike base to the edge of the rear visor. A 4 ¾-inch tall spike is mounted to a cruciform base which is held to the helmet by three star-head threaded studs held by four square nuts and washers and a rear domed silver split pin (a replacement). Flat gilded chin scales are held by rosettes retaining a single Saxon cockade. The helmet is complete with the 2-inch wide leather sweatband and split silk lining. The underside of the front visor is lined with green morocco leather; the rear visor lined with red morocco. Marked size "54" in pencil on the crown.

Condition: Very good to near excellent. Some damage to the finish of the front visor; crown slightly dented around the spike base. From the collection of J.T. Hamrick, M.D.
