Description

Württemberg Model 1895 Officers' Spiked Helmet. About 9 ½-inches tall with a polished leather skull and visors. The squared-front visor is trimmed in gilded-brass; the rear visor untrimmed. The gilded-brass Württemberg front plate is mounted to the helmet with two threaded posts held by square nuts. No additional holes in the front but there is an extra hole near the front of the cruciform base. A gilded-brass spine runs from the rear of the cruciform base to the edge of the rear visor. A 4 ½-inch spike is mounted to a cruciform base which is secured to the helmet by four star-head studs. The studs include two threaded and two split rivet styles. Flat gilded chin scales are held by rosettes retaining the appropriate cockades. The helmet is complete with the 2-inch wide leather sweatband and split silk lining. The underside of the front visor is lined with green morocco leather; the rear visor lined with red morocco. Stamped "D.M.A.G." on the inside of the skull and size "53 ½" in pencil.

Condition: Very good. Moderate to a little heavier crazing to the leather surfaces; back visor slightly misshapen; crown slightly pushed in. From the collection of J.T. Hamrick, M.D.
