Named KIA Medal Group

Fantastic Archive of Medals, Documents, Letters, and Photographs Belonging to Theodore Scouten, 315th Infantry Regiment, 79th Infantry Division Killed in Action January 12, 1945 at the Battle of Hatten-Rittershoffen, France.

This large and quite complete archive chronicles the military service of Technical Sergeant Theodore Scouten (Army Serial Number 33346981) who was killed in combat on January 12, 1945. Scouten was from Noxen, Pennsylvania and both he and his brother Charles served during the war. Theodore did his basic training at Camp Forrest, Tennessee in 1943. The archive includes about 40 letters to his mother and father spanning mid-1943 to late 1944 when he was overseas and in addition to the usual family chat Theodore occasionally includes some cautious references to his division's actions. Highlights of the archive include:

Named cased Bronze Star Medal awarded for meritorious achievement during the Normandy Campaign with post-war award document.

Named, numbered, and cased Silver Star in the original cardboard box. Numbered 54054. Scouten was a BAR rifleman and was awarded the medal for single handedly wiping out two German anti-tank squads. In a letter to his mother dated August 25, 1944 he casually remarks "..I am sending you my Combat pin and Silver Star. I received the Silver Star the other morning for some of the work I did last month." The medal is accompanied by a post-war award document.

Named and numbered Purple Heart with award document "For Military Merit and Wounds Received in Action Resulting in his Death January 12, 1945". The medal is numbered 438894.

French Croix de Guerre with bronze star and fourragere and award document. Other medals include a Good Conduct medal, European African Middle Eastern Campaign medal with four campaign stars, Combat Infantry badge, Marksman badge with rifle bar, various ribbon bars and a single dog tag with what appears to be blood on it.

Framed Memorial document with Franklin D. Roosevelt signature (autopen perhaps) and Scouten's casket flag. Scouten was initially interred at the U.S. Military cemetery at Epinal, France but was later reburied at Orcutt Cemetery in Noxen, Pennsylvania.

The documents are housed in a beautiful custom clam-shell leather case with magnetic closures. The case is adorned with personal photos and a contemporary newspaper clipping reporting on Scouten's Silver Star award.

Included are a few military effects from Charles Scouten, who served in the Pacific Theater during the war. Items include a Philippine Liberation medal, Good Conduct medal, discharge papers, ribbon bars, sleeve insignia and two letters to his parents.

Condition: A large group consisting of many documents helpful to further research, most items in generally very good or better condition.
