Description

Rare 1912 47-Star Flag Commemorating the Statehood of New Mexico.

Approximately 38 x 80-inches. Cotton, or linen multi-piece construction reinforced at the corners of the hoist end. Forty-seven cotton muslin stars with zig-zag stitching arranged in rows of 8/8/8/7/8/8. Hoist end stenciled "U.S. ARMY STANDARD / BUNTING". Brass grommets at each end of the hoist.

There was never an official 48-star flag of the United States as New Mexico became a state on January 6, 1912 and new flags aren't adopted until the 4th of July. The addition of the state of Arizona the same year changed the number of stars before a new flag could be adopted.

Condition: Scattered moderate to large holes with some loss at the fly end. Rare in any condition.
