19th Century General Surgical and Amputation Set by
Hutchinson.An impressive and possibly almost complete set of surgical and amputation instruments. Set comprises of tools such as; bone saw, tourniquet, trephine and amputation knives. Some tools marked HUTCHINSON, some are marked W&H / HUTCHINSON / SHEFFIELD, while the checkered white scale examples are marked [crown] / SIMPSON / 55 STRAND. It appears some substitutes were used to complete the set, not detracting from it. Cased set is fitted with purple-velour lined partitions. Wooden case measures 17 by 7-inches. Inside label on safety partition flap reads W. & H. HUTCHINSON / SHEFFIELD. / SURGICAL INSTRU / MAKERS / TO THE ROYAL NAVY. Please note the military latches on the outer lid.
W. H. Hutchinson was a surgical instrument maker based in Sheffield, England, a city known for its high-quality steel and cutlery production. Sheffield was a major center for the production of surgical instruments in the 19th century, and companies like W. H. Hutchinson contributed to the global reputation of the city's steel industry.
Condition: Fine to excellent, as presented. Minor wear and handling overall. Some light spots to a selection of blades. A few of the larger knives, the handles have stress cracks. Inside of case with minor wear, tears to fabric. Wooden case in very good condition, minimal wear and use. Slight split underneath more than likely due to weight of instruments.
