A-2 Flight Jacket Identified to B-29 Pilot 1st Lieutenant Richard Dobbs, 881st Bomb Squadron, 500th Bomb Group, 20th Air Force.An all original leather A-2 flight jacket worn by 1st Lt. Richard O. Dodds, Pilot of the 881st Bomb
Squadron of the 500th Bomb Group in the 20th Air Force. The jacket features original knit cuffs and waistband, original functional Conmar zipper, and original cloth lining. Sadly, the manufacturer's label and size tag are not present. Dodd's army serial number, D-0599 is stenciled in black on the cloth lining.
A theater-made hand-painted 500th bomb group patch featuring Bugs Bunny pulling the night shade down on the rising sun is sewn to the left chest. There is evidence of a removed leather name strip on the right.
Dodds Piloted B-29 Superfortress 'Draggin Lady' SN# 42-24694, 'Booze Hound' SN# 44-69746
and several others based out of Saipan. He flew 36 missions and over 550 total hours and was awarded the Air Medal with 4 oak leaf clusters, Distinguished Flying Cross, Battle Star Western Theater, and Battle Star Japan Campaign. He flew his first mission on November 24, 1944 to Tokyo, a mission with a duration of over 13 hours. This mission was to become famous, as it was the first bombing mission to Tokyo, Japan from land based aircraft and was documented at that time by United News, showing Dodds flying the B-29, Z-Square-6 or 'Draggin Lady' taking off for that raid. His final mission, number 36 was on July 17th 1945 and he returned home later that month.
Condition: Good. Cuffs and waistband worn; leather scuffed from honest wear.
