Description

Apollo 11 moon-flown U.S. flag

Apollo 11 Flown American Flag on a Crew-Signed Presentation Certificate, Framed. A 5.75" x 3.75" silk U.S. flag mounted to a 10" x 12" color certificate printed with the words: "This Flag Traveled to the Moon with Apollo 11, the First Manned Lunar Landing, July 20, 1969/ APOLLO 11/ July 16-24, 1969/ Armstrong - Collins - Aldrin". Printed on the lower area is the Apollo 11 mission insignia above the crew's signatures: "Neil Armstrong", "M Collins", and "Buzz Aldrin". At the very bottom are printed the immortal words Armstrong spoke as he stepped onto the moon's surface: "One small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind." This desirable and historic presentation has been framed to an overall size of 13.25" x 16.25". On the back of the frame is a period typed label: "Given to P. M. Sturtevant/ NASA Special Asst. Gemini". Excellent condition. The flag is bright and does not exhibit any of the often-seen bleedthrough from the glue. The certificate is clean and the signatures are bold with no inscriptions. A virtually unimprovable display example of a flag flown on this legendary mission. From the personal collection of Gemini Program Office special assistant and longtime NASA employee, Paul M. Sturtevant.
