Description

Scarce Handle-Bar Curiosa Belgian Pepperbox Marked Herman.

Serial no. 199 [stamped inside grips on frame], 1 1/4-inch barrel cluster [8-inch handle bar extension], wooden grip panes [marked by pencil 169 inside]. Originally appears to be nickel-plated finish. 6-shot configuration, about XX caliber. Cylinder stamped LGE, "S" stamp near folding trigger. Inside grips on frame also marked HERMAN / BREVETE. Together with handle bar attachment [two-stage attachment] which could be removed by a quick pull and reveal the pepperbox, as long as hammer was lifted as it locks in place when the handle is attached. Consignor notes state; "Probably fitted on a Victorian bicycle and used around town. These are very rare most people think that they are guns that are designed to shoot around corners or gas operated but they are quite unusual." See Firearms Curiosa by Lewis Wynant [pages 154-155].
Note: According to research; handle bar pepperboxes were more than likely made or generated in France and Belgium. The were probably all 6-shot, double action, using pinfire cartridges of very small caliber, and were sold in pairs.

Condition: Good to very good. Wear overall with areas of pitting and mottled patina. Action functions, but tight. Handle bar attachment with moderate wear overall, pitting and some light dings [handle bar cut-down]. Grips good with bruising and bumps.
