Description

19th Century European Amputation Kit.

Presented is a vintage surgical amputation kit, most likely European [possibly British or German] and dating to the late 19th century. Highlights include an amputation saw, capital knife, bone forceps and tourniquet. Some of the tools have markings/proofs of [crown] over [asterisk]. Contained in a red velour-line traveling style wooden case with latches and folding handle. Dimensions of case are 20 by 7 1/2-inches.

According to research; amputation instruments first appeared as individual surgeon's tools rather than organized sets. By the 17th century, European surgeons, notably those in France, England, and Germany began grouping their tools in portable fitted cases, marking the origin of the "amputation kit."

Condition: Good as presented. Tools with moderate wear and use, some pitting and surface rust present. One knife is particular is in rough shape with pitting and loss to blade. Chips and mars to wooden handles. Compartment dividers missing or lose. No key present.
