Description

Cased Post Civil War Field Surgical Kit by F.G. Otto & Sons.

An unusual and precise set used for minor operations, wound treatments and even small amputations. Set appears complete with tourniquet, bone or artery forceps, surgical scissors, Lipson-style blades, chisel and a small saw blade. Some of the larger blades and the chisel appear to be used with an interchangeable ebony-style checkered handle, all others fitted with smooth panels. The set is contained in a faded plum-velour lined case with instruments housed in the main compartment and an additional lid compartment hidden beneath the panel. Most components bear the OTTO & SONS or F. G. OTTO & SONS mark. Escutcheon on wooden lid is engraved W. B. WALL. No label inside field kit. Dimensions; 9 by 3 1/2-inches.

Research shows F. G. Otto & Sons was established in New York around 1875 by Ferdinand Gottlieb Otto. He was a prominent late 19th-century manufacturer and importer of surgical and orthopedic instruments, trusses, and medical apparatus. The firm operated from 64 Chatham Street and produced a wide range of surgical kits; including field, amputating, and trephining sets

Condition: Fair as presented, with greater wear and use, moderate spots and light pitting on blades. Handles with stress and handling wear. The wooden case inside with minor scuffs and wear, outer case with heavier handling wear, scratches and splits to edges; moderate fragility all around. Latches and folding handle with heavy wear. Compartment divider panel does not hold secure when closed and items shift and fall out. No key present.
