Description

Traveling Surgical or Physician's Field Surgical Kit, Post Civil War.

An unusual and precise set used for minor operations, wound treatments and possibly small amputations. Three tier folding set appears somewhat complete but we cannot confirm all items are original to the set. Highlights include; bleeders, scalpels, surgical scissors, artery forceps, trocar and cannula tubes, bistoury and probes among others. The set is contained in a tri-fold brown leather traveling pouch with gold-color bordering. Some tools bear London and Paris markings. No label inside field kit. Approximately 31 tools total. Dimensions; 14-inches wide when fully opened, 7 by 5-inches when closed.

Research shows small 19th-century field or physician kits were compact sets designed for doctors' house calls and emergencies, offering portability and essential tools for minor surgery. They were convenient and affordable but limited in instrument variety and unsuitable for major operations like amputations.

Condition: Very good as presented, moderate spots and light pitting on blades and most of accessories. Some handles with splits, stress and handling wear. The leather case inside with separations and wear to lining, outer case with moderate creasing from opening and closing, scratches and scuffs to edges. Latch functioning. No key present.
