Description

U.S. McClellan Cavalry Saddle with Saddle Bags and U.S. Marked Stirrups.

A well-preserved example of a U.S. Army McClellan cavalry saddle, featuring a 12-inch seat and U.S. marked leather stirrups, with various inspector and maker's stampings present throughout. The saddle retains its original leather components, rigging straps, and hardware, all displaying uniform age and patina. The brass shield plate at the cantle is clearly stamped "12 INCH SEAT".

The McClellan saddle was officially adopted by the U.S. Army in 1859, designed under the direction of General George B. McClellan following his observation of European cavalry equipment. It became the standard issue for American mounted troops from the Civil War through the early 20th century. Noted for its simplicity, strength, and comfort for both horse and rider, the design endured-with minor modifications-for over 80 years, making it one of the longest-serving military saddle patterns in U.S. history.

Condition: Good overall as presented. The leather exhibits honest wear, scattered cracking, and creasing consistent with age and service use, but remains supple and intact. Some scuffing and minor separations are visible along high-stress areas. All major components appear complete, though no display stand is included.
