Cased Post Civil War Amputation Kit by W. M. Autenrieth.

A very nice set of surgical and amputation instruments, set complete; highlights include Liston bone nippers, tourniquet, multiple surgical knives such as scalpels and Liston-style examples marked W. AUTENRIETH. A large capitol amputation saw and smaller knife-style saw unmarked which sit on lid but appear original to the set. All blades nicely mounted on ebony-style checkered handles. Label inside the lid of the purple-velour lined wooden case reads W. M. AUTENRIETH / MANUFACTURER / OF / SURGICAL INSTRUMENTS / CINCINNATI OHIO. Case appears to be mahogany. Brass bound case with double line inlay and vacant escutcheon. Dimensions; 16 by 5 1/2-inches.

According to research, William [W. M.] Autenrieth was a German-born instrument maker in Cincinnati; he trained under Max Wocher and opened his own shop in 1869 making surgical & dental instruments and artificial limbs.

Condition: Fine as presented, with minimal of wear and use, some minor spots on blades as expected, larger blade appears to have been cleaned/refinished. Handles with stress and handling wear. The varnished wooden case inside with minor scuffs, outer case with light handling wear and fine nicks to edges. Key present.
