Description
Engraved & Gold Plated Winchester Model 1873 Saddle Ring Carbine.Serial no. 72824 [lower tang], 44-40 caliber, 20-inch round barrel marked with blade front sight and leaf rear sight. Top of barrel marked [two-line]; WINCHESTER'S-REPEATING ARMS. NEW HAVEN. CT. / KING'S-IMPROVEMENT-PATENTED-MARCH 29. 1866. OCTOBER 16. 1860. Marked MODEL 1873 on upper tang. Gold plating present over nickel silver-plating. Exquisite floral scrollwork engraving throughout frame, upper tang and buttplate. Scroll engraving on chamber and breech surrounding the leaf sight. The left side plate is engraved with animal scene within an oval. On the right side of the frame a dear framed within a round feature. Lightly figured straight walnut buttstock and forearm. Carbine buttplate with trap, cleaning rod not present. Lower tang and stock inlet marked XXX 706 and 706 only [on wood]. The number 706 is also found on the inside of the buttplate. Date of manufacture is 1881.
Condition: Very good for this model. Gold plating visible on dust cover, lever, buttplate and barrel bands. Scattered remnants on frame, tang and hammer. The balance a smooth silvery nickel-plating patina with flaking to magazine and concentrating on underside of overall gun, with a few exceptions. Wood is good as refinished, moderate wear in high traffic areas from handling. Some loss to forearm near barrel edges. Numerous dings and fine scratches present. Lever a bit loose. Marred screws. Bore good, mechanically sound. Collection of a Southern Gentleman.
