Description
Rare L.D. Nimschke Signed and Engraved Winchester Model 1866 Saddle Ring Carbine.Serial no. 99084 [signed L.D.N. ahead of serial number], 44 centerfire, 20-inch round barrel with blade front sight and leaf rear sight. Top of barrel marked [two-line]; WINCHESTER'S-REPEATING ARMS. NEW HAVEN. CT. / KING'S-IMPROVEMENT-PATENTED-MARCH 29. 1866. OCTOBER 16. 1860. Gold plated frame and blued finish. Exquisite floral scrollwork engraving throughout frame, upper and lower tang and buttplate. Star burst on chamber. The left side plate is script engraved with the initials of "C.Ch." enclosed inside a banner. On the right side of the frame and the very front of the right side of the frame are vacant scroll banners. Lovely figured straight walnut buttstock and forearm. Crescent buttplate with trap, 3-piece cleaning rod present. 7377 marked on the inside of the buttplate, also the butt of the stock is crudely marked with what appears to be J RIVRA/1928 [not sure the significance of it, apart from a previous owner?]. Date of manufacture is 1872.
Please note: For reference on Nimschke's work, see the plates published in R. L. Wilson's book "L.D. Nimschke Firearms Engraver," on pages 50 thru 56. LDN shown on pages 50 and 54 are also on the bottom of the frame. See page 48 for similar frame engraved motifs, including the scroll banners, as appearing on a Winchester Model 1866.
Included in the sale is a small binder from previous auction house, well made with detailing information and history as it relates to this masterpiece. Sold as lot 1038 in Rock Island Auction's September 2021 sale, for $51,750.
Condition: Very good to fine for this model. Gold plated frame, tang and buttplate retain 40-50% gold plating with balance being the exposed brass, mixing in nicely. Retains approximately 20-25% bluing on barrel and magazine, with the balance; some pitting and patina. Light patina to lever, saddle ring and barrel bands. Loading gate with some original finish. Wood is good with what appears to be the original varnish, but of course worn in high traffic areas from handling. Numerous dings and fine scratches present. Bore good, mechanically sound. Collection of a Southern Gentleman.
