Texas Ranger Captain John R. Hughes Engraved Watch and Chain.

C. 1871-72. Waltham, Grade P.S. Bartlett, Model 1857. 11 jewel pocket watch inscribed in block letters TEXAS / RANGERS / JRH on back of case and in script inside back case JOHN R. HUGHES / AUSTIN, TEXAS. Coin silver American Watch Co. case. Matching "590" throughout along with other numbers and possible initials indicating the watchmaker [not confirmed]. Mounted on chain with coin silver ram charm. According to documentation provided by previous consignor, this watch had been on display for a number of years at the Hubbard Museum of the American West located in Ruidoso Downs, New Mexico.

Note: Manufacturer printout information included indicates only 2000 of these Waltham factory production movements (mechanisms) were produced at the time. This watch was likely a private purchase, personally commissioned and inscribed by a jeweler. As such, there may not be an official record whether acquired at one's own expense or presented as a personal gift.

John Reynolds Hughes (1855-1947) was a legendary Texas Ranger, cowboy, and author, renowned for his relentless pursuit of outlaws along the Mexico-American border. His fearless law enforcement earned him a place among the most influential Texas Rangers in history. Hughes famously hunted down the killers of Ranger Captain Frank Jones and is believed to have inspired the iconic Lone Ranger character, with Zane Grey dedicating The Lone Star Ranger to him in 1915.

Condition: Fine with minimal wear. Fine scratches present from storage and or use.
