Description

First National 9-Star Flag: Co. K 7th Alabama Infantry.

66 1/2-inches x 36-inches glazed or polished cotton flag with nine stars in the canton. 1.75" hoist with two whipped grommets. Entirely hand-stitched. The stars are visible on either side of the canton, through peek-a-boo cut-outs. According to the consignor, this was the battle flag of Co. K 7th Alabama Infantry, known as the "Florence Guards". They mustered in Pensacola, Florida on May 18, 1861. There were nine states in the Confederacy at that time. The 10th state, Virginia, formally entered the Confederacy on May 23, 1861, after a popular referendum confirmed the ordinance of secession passed in convention. A 7-star silk presentation version of this flag, also attributed to Co. K 7th Alabama Infantry, exists. It is owned by the Alabama Department of Archives and History in Montgomery. That flag was given to recruits by the ladies of Florence on March 13, 1861 with a formal presentation ceremony occurring on April 1st. Shortly afterwards, the members of the regiment traveled by train to Pensacola.

Condition: Scattered damp and blood stains. No rips, tears or repairs. A well-preserved example, carefully maintained over the years. The use of glazed cotton is typical of the 1860s.
