Civil War Soldier's Letter by Alfred Nelson of the 10th Iowa Infantry with Charleston Ambush Content.

Three pages of a bifolium, 5 1/4 x 7 3/4 inches, "Birds Point," Missouri; January 18, [1862]. Private Alfred Nelson of the 10th Iowa Infantry writes to William Bowers of Franklinville, New Jersey, describing the Confederate ambush at Charleston, Missouri, on January 8, 1862. Though not directly engaged in the fighting, Nelson recounts the attack:

"Since I last wrote to you, our Redgiment has had a Battle with the rebils 6 of our Men Killed And 16 wounded, Loss of the rebils Not known, I was Not in the Battle because there was only 300 hundred out of the Redgiment orderd to go And they Chews a few out of Every Co And the Number was So Soon made up that I could Not get in...Our Men was marching Along About 4 oclock in the Morning and it was very Dark And raning And All At once the rebils fired And run Amediately, then our Boys gave them the very Best liks they had..." Signed, "Alfred N. Nelson."
