Description

Army of the Potomac Embalmer: Business Card and Stereo View.
This rather macabre lot includes two items related to Dr. Richard Burr, an embalmer who was active (perhaps TOO active) during the Civil War. It includes a stereo view from Taylor's "War for the Union" series, after the photograph by Brady. The title label on verso identifies the subject as "Dr. Richard Burr, Embalming Surgeon, Army of the James." Burr is seen pumping embalming fluid into the decedent, laid out on a board. The other item is an extremely rare piece, the 3 1/4" x 2" business card for "Dr. Richard Burr, Embalming Surgeon, Army of the Potomac. Bodies Recovered From the Battle Field and Forwarded to the Order of Friends." Burr's mobile office was at City Point, Virginia. Great condition. This rare survivor was sent in a letter home with the remains of a Union soldier and the family retained it.
