Description
Pair of German Fencing Swords. This pair appear to have been made to disassemble and transport due to the pommel nut construction. Little differences appear between the two examples. Blades measure approximately 33 3/4-inches overall. Baskets are approximately 24 1/2-inches in diameter. Handle wrapped in twine-like material. An almost identical pair observed recently online had the blades marked Made in Germany and had distributor markings from J H Lau in New York [active 1866-1920s]; known for fencing and sports equipment.
Note: Dueling among German nobility, particularly academy students rose to popularity in the late 19th century following unification of Germany in 1871. These appear to be 20th century. A photocopy of that listing is included with the swords.
Condition: Very good as presented. Blade with losses to finish and pitting. Guards with some loses to black paint. Handle wrap fine. The Estate of the Late Hiroshi Harada of Piedmont, California.
