Description
Collection of Early Military and Civilian Painted Miniatures.1) 4 1/4" x 5 2/5" portrait of a young British officer from the King's 44th Regiment. Not signed or dated, but likely of the 1800-1810 period. Two vertical cracks, including one which runs up the middle, bisecting the portrait. Housed in an ornate gesso frame. Inscribed on dust barrier: "Member of the Freake family." 2) 4" x 5" portrait of a another young member of the 44th Regiment, housed in a brown leather photographic case. Not signed or dated. Excellent. 3) 2 1/2" x 3" [sight] portrait of a young officer. Not signed or dated. Housed in a red leather photographic case. Hinges and mat are attached, but loose. 4) 1 3/4" x 1 7/8" portrait of a young man facing dexter, encased in a 9K gold frame and housed in a leather jewelers case from A. P. Lundborg of Worcester, Massachusetts. Not signed or dated, but circa 1775. Leather is worn, but miniature is excellent. Accompanying research indicates the first portrait shows Percy Evans-Freke (1774-1844), son of Sir John Evans Freke and Lady Elizabeth Christopher Harvey. #2 and #3 may depict Lt. Col. Percy Augustus Evans-Freke (Grenadier Guards 1812-1847) and Col. Fenton-John Evans-Freke (Life Guards 1809). #4 may depict Stephen Lush (1753-1825), a New Yorker who served as an officer in the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War.
