U.S. Remington 1857 Maynard Percussion Rifle.

Unserialized, .69 caliber, 41-inch barrel with fixed front sight. Lock marked: REMINGTON'S / ILION, N.Y. / 1857 / U.S. Maynard primer. Case-hardened hammer. Smooth straight hardwood stock with sling swivels and three barrel bands. Metal ramrod, triggerguard and buttplate. Edward Maynard (1813-1891), a dentist turned firearms inventor, patented a priming system in 1845 that used a paper "tape" embedded with priming compound (fulminate) at regular intervals.

Condition: Good. Finish primarily a bright grey patina with signs of handling wear, age and surface rust. Rear sight absent. Scattered bruises, scuffs and dings present to wood. Action good. Moderately pitted bore.
