Description

Engraved Colt Model 1851 Navy Percussion Revolver.

Serial no. 28194 [dot] on barrel, triggerguard, frame and butt [wedge not removed], .36 caliber, 7 1/2-inch octagonal barrel with front sight and address reading -ADDRESS SAML COLT NEW YORK CITY-. The gun has extensive folitate and scroll-engraving similar to that of Gustave Young. Details of this recognizable style include scroll work with floral termination on the left side of the frame. Young's master touch is seen in the matching panels on the loading lever and barrel lug which extend over the barrel flats. Extremely handsome execution. Left side of frame marked: COLTS PATENT. Cylinder with naval engagement scene and with all 6 safety pins. Brass small triggerguard and backstrap. Antique one-piece grip. Left grip panel with raised carved Mexican eagle. This gun also includes engraving on the backstrap.

Condition: Good. The surface a smooth gray-brown patina with scattered fine pitting. Cylinder scene is week but visible. Some parts have heavy dents, bruising from poor handling and use. Grip has numerous classic age lines, but have shrunk and have loss to heel area. Action needs work, cylinder will not always turn. Loading lever latch a bit damaged, but functioning. Marred screws. Bore ok with pitting. Front sight is a likely period replacement.
