Description
Scarce, Private Purchase Cantel's Patent Leather Civil War Canteen.Near mint with original sling this is actually a slight variant, and probably very early as it is completely unmarked. Fabricated of two pressed hard leather shells sealed together with copper rivets with pewter spout, brass stopper chain and brass slots at the top for sling. The original 5/8" wide brown leather sling full length but torn where it attaches to the canteen at one side. Sling sound and supple with just some crazing and light flaking. Hard brown leather canteen itself is about mint, with absolutely no crazing/ flaking. The only flaw is a small hole at one edge where the leather is simply pushed in but present and easily made imperceptible. Interestingly the hole is the exact size of a buckshot ball. Choice example and interesting variant of this very rare Civil War canteen.
