Description

Victorian Five Ringed Rapier.

Approximately 51-inches overall with a 40 1/4-inch double edge straight blade. Sword blade 1 1/4-inches at its widest. Wire-bound grip, grip is 4 1/2-inches long. Ovoid twist pommel, 1 1/2-inches in diameter. The five ring guard is symmetrical. Recurved quillons. This sword sold in October 2012, as lot 458 in Little Johns Auction in California. Note: According to A Glossary of the Construction, Decoration and Use of Arms and Armor by George Cameron Stone, [pages 524-526], Rapiers are swords especially designed for thrusting and provided with a more or less elaborate guard. The name first appeared in England about 1560, although this type of sword was brought there much earlier by the Spaniards.

Condition: Fair with moderate to heavy with age wear. Blade showing an overall mottled gray patina with heavy wear. Scratches present to metal. Crude metal and some pitting inside hilt. Sword displays well even with all the concerns listed.
