Description
U.S. Springfield 1863 Percussion Musket I.D.'d to New Hampshire Soldier Whose Unit Served at Gettysburg and Cold Harbor.Unserialized, .62 caliber, 39-inch barrel with fixed front sight and folding rear sight. Lock marked: 1863, (eagle) and U.S. / SPRINGFIELD. Smooth walnut straight stock with three barrel bands, sling swivels and leather shoulder sling. Metal ramrod. U.S. stamped carbine buttplate. Right side of stock reading: BULL RUN / JULY 31 [sic] / 1861, left side: KLLD / NH BENHAM and HEMAN ALLEN on forearm.
Heman Allen (1837-1912) resided at Claremont, New Hampshire. On June 5, 1861, he mustered into Company H, 2nd Regiment New Hampshire Infantry. He was captured at 1st Bull Run on July 21, 1861 and was confined at Confederate POW facilities in Richmond and New Orleans. He returned to service on October 24, 1862, went AWOL for a two-week period, rejoining his regiment on June 8, 1863. He was promoted to Corporal on January 1, 1864 and mustered out on June 21, 1864. Besides Bull Run, the 2nd New Hampshire fought at Gettysburg and Cold Harbor.
Condition: Very good. Finish primarily a smooth grey patina with scattered signs of handling wear and pitting. Scuffs, dings and bruising present to wood. Action good. Barrel plugged.
