Description
John H. Helgoth Cased Sixth Plate Tintype Together with Three Letters.Cased image measures 3.2" x 3.75" and Helgoth is posed seated dressed in his uniform holding a Savage revolver across his lap. There are stripes on his cuffs indicating he is a veteran, which would date the image to mid-1864 to 1865. Together with three war-dated letters to his aunt Mary Harmon. Letters vary in size and are all written from New Creek, Virginia.
Helgoth served in the Maryland 2nd Potomac Home Brigade, enlisting in August 1861. He re-enlisted as a veteran volunteer on March 7, 1864 and was wounded in action at Lynchburg, Virginia on June 18, 1864. He was mustered out of service on May 29, 1865.
Two of the letters are undated, but one has content regarding his re-enlistment, circa March 1864. This letter reads in part: "...We ar looking et fight here. i don't know wheather the rebles is coming to New Creek or not. I have inlisted in the vetting rigment. I don't know if the rigment will or not, but I think that they will all inlist as most of them of hold the old origination and i think that we will git a furlo the first of April..." All three letters are accompanied by their original transmittal cover.
Condition: Tintype has expected wear, with stray spotting and two light creases. Two of the letters have rust stains at top, with stray staining. One letter has small loss of paper across one fold affecting a single word.
