Description
European Superior Officer's Sword in the Oriental Style, Early 19th Century. An exceptional European superior officer's sword crafted in the Oriental or Eastern-influenced style, featuring mother-of-pearl hilt scales, gilt bronze guard and fittings, and a finely curved wootz (Damascus) steel blade of approximately 33-inches. The hilt is elaborately detailed, the crossguard richly ornamented with classical motifs, and the pommel and chain guard decorated with finely chased designs. The mother-of-pearl grips display lustrous iridescence and are elegantly contoured, complementing the ornate gilt mounts. The sword is housed in its blued steel scabbard, fitted with gilt-brass suspension mounts featuring bold lion masks and laurel decoration, all retaining much of their original gilding and surface detail. The blade is forged of superior wootz steel, exhibiting a strong watered pattern characteristic of high-grade Eastern blades adapted for European officers of rank.
Note: According to consignor notes, this example was originally acquired from a reputable French dealer, who identified it as French, dating to the first third of the 19th century. The workmanship and design reflect the Napoleonic and Restoration-era fascination with Orientalism, blending European refinement with Near Eastern blade traditions.
Condition: Fine overall. The blade remains bright, clean, and free from nicks or damage, with a well-defined wootz pattern visible throughout. The hilt and mounts retain strong original gilding, showing only light wear and minor toning from age. The scabbard is in fine condition, with its blued finish and gilt fittings well preserved, exhibiting only modest age patina. A superb and highly decorative officer's sword, representing the artistry and international influence of early 19th-century European arms craftsmanship.
