Civil War German-Made Non-Regulation Officers' Sword Presented to Lt. Thomas Holland, Co. A, New York 133 Regiment by the Washington Volunteers, November 3, 1865.

32 ½-inch slightly curved blade etched with an spread-wing eagle with "E Pluribus Unum" banner on the obverse side and a "US" on the reverse side. Maker marked Herder on the reverse ricasso and marked "Iron Proof" on the back of the blade. The sword is 38 ½-inches overall. Steel branch guard with wire-wrapped fish skin grips. Metal scabbard with two mounting rings. An ornate metal plaque is affixed to the scabbard between the mounts on the obverse side, engraved: "Presented to Lt. Thomas Holland / Co. A. 133d. REGt. N.Y.S.V. / by the Washington Volunteers Nov. 3d. 1865.

Thomas Holland enlisted at 21 years old on August 21, 1865 at Brooklyn, New York as a Sergeant. On September 24, 1862 he mustered into "I" Co. New York 133rd Infantry. He was promoted to 1st Sergeant on January 1, 1864 and 2nd Lieutenant on December 24, 1864. He mustered out on June 6, 1865 at Washington, D.C.

Condition: Blade with an even light patina, hilt with uniform dark patina and the scabbard has light surface rust. Very good.
