Description
Michael Price Marked Abalone Mosaic California Knife.5 3/4-inch spearpoint blade with ricasso twice marked M. PRICE / SAN FRAN [angle]. Oval silver guard. Features an elaborate mosaic handle of abalone shell and silver, the topmost piece of abalone on each side being in the form of a keystone. The handle's wrapped edges and the guard are also silver. Contained in matching silver-plated scabbard.
Michael Price was one of the most renowned knifemakers in 19th-century America, particularly noted for his high-quality handcrafted knives produced in San Francisco, California. He established his workshop during the mid-1800s, around the time of the California Gold Rush, and became famous for making custom knives, especially Bowie knives and daggers, which were highly sought after by miners, frontiersmen, and soldiers.
Condition: Good as presented, Michael Price marking is spurious and not confirmed as original. A moderate mottled gray patina adorns all elements of the knife. Wear and scuffs to edge blade. Missing an abalone scale on handle. Fine scratches and pitting throughout. Scabbard with multiple dings and scratches. The integral long belt hook is missing and appears to have some filing [soldering] work done in its place.
