Description

Silver Mounted Italian Flintlock Pistol Signed S. Scandella.

Unserialized, .68 caliber, 12 1/2-inch octagonal to round barrel. Top of barrel near muzzle is maker marked S / SCA / NDE / LLA along with proofs seen on Italian and Spanish examples. Lockplate signed/marked "SS. CANDELLA". Sideplate, lockplate and triggerguard are all quality chiseled steel. Fruitwood stock; stock is mounted with intaglio silver. Six barrel bands present, hinting at the fact that they were probably sold or used in Turkey, for the trade. Embellishments throughout make this a great example with multiple features from different regions. Overall length of this pistol is 19 1/2-inches.
Note: Scandella is listed as Florence, circa 1725-1740.

Condition: Very good for its age. Metal finish primarily a smooth grey patina with fine patches of pitting overall; traces of lacquer in areas. Stock with dents, bruises and minor losses, possibly cleaned at some point. Action functions but missing a step. Bore dark, as expected.
