Description

Scottish Baskethilt Backsword.

Approximately 33-inch single edge blade with thickened back, retaining 3/4 length. Two fullers on each side of the blade. Blade appears unmarked. Conical pommel with incised decoration. Wooden grip [missing wire braid]. Heavy ornate large baskethilt style. Overall length of sword is almost 39 1/2-inches, an impressive example of early Scottish workmanship. According to arms historians; a true broadsword possesses a double-edged blade, while similar wide-bladed swords with a single sharpened edge and a thickened back are called backswords. Various forms of basket-hilt were mounted on both broadsword and backsword blades. The purpose of the backsword was that is was safer to carry and also in combat, a back blow could be given with less risk of death to your adversary. For example, it was polite to use the back edge to give someone a lesson without dismissing them. Let's not forget, that fighting with a Scottish sword began when a child was four years old and started with sticks and cudgels.

Condition: Good to very good for its age. Scattered pitting throughout. Moderate wear overall blade. Some nicks and pitting to edge. Baskethilt with a mellow dark patina, one separation present. Grip overall, good with minor wear. Loss to tip of blade. The Estate of the Late Hiroshi Harada of Piedmont, California.
